ReVisit - 2011

Grennan and Sperandio are working with Towneley Hall over 12 months, during this time they are researching and reflecting upon objects in the collections of Townley Hall. During the same period, they will similarly research and reflect upon the mass of material culture that supports and creates social life in contemporary Burnley. The artists will produce seven new artworks that literally bring together objects from the collection and items either discovered through the social networks of contemporary Burnley or commissioned by Grennan & Sperandio from manufacturers in the town.

The first installation is current on show in the Burnley Room at Towneley Hall, as Grennan explains:

" 'Hammerton Street Saturday Night' evokes the look and sense of Burnley's bar and club culture. The Victorian glass domes stand in for both bottles of liquor in behind-the-bar displays and for people crowded at the bars themselves.

The green glow and electric blue of the plinth belong to this look, experienced weekly around Hammerton Street in the clubs and bars that come and go, such as Lava and Ignite, Tabu and the Iron Works.

However, the glass cases belong entirely to a culture of domestic display, now either 'antique' or overlooked. They reside in junk shops, back rooms and museum stores. Light enlivens the glass domes' coat of grime, making their unkempt condition intentional and visable. Light anthropomorphises them, and they become curious participants in a small Saturday night drama."

The exhibition dates are as follows:

Piece 1 'Hammerton Street Saturday Night' - 20 May - 01 Jul

Piece 2 - 08 Jul - 19 Aug

Piece 3 - 26 Aug - 07 Oct

The Open Shop Project  - Tea Cosies for Towneley

Towneley Hall worked with artists ArtYarn through May and June 2010 to bring their collection of tea sets to the people of Burnley. Working in the old Car Shop on St James Street, ArtYarn used traditional skills of knitting and crochet to create tea cosies with the public, inspired by Towneley’s tea sets. The resulting creations were displayed in the Hall throughout the heritage celebrations in June.
